I think it can be a very good thing to strive to be above reproach. Seriously. Now, I frequently fail. In no uncertain terms, I am not above reproach. What struck me today is that that may well include my reading selections.

Awkward Uncles
Once upon a time, there were sitcoms: situational comedies. That was back before everything was offensive. You know, a few YEARS ago! Anyway, sitcoms could deal with awkward uncles.
Grumpy Child
Imagine you’re a college student in a religion class. The teacher assigns you to talk to people in the street and really try to “git out there” and “dig deep!” They bus you into a downtownish area of a city, drop you off, and there you are. Feeling like a grumpy child yet?
Turtles
There are so many weird hangups in a writer’s life. Am I wrong? For instance, I keep stalling on my poetry project because I keep writing poetry. And, since I’m self-publishing, who’s to say when I should cut myself off?! Even weirder, my latest writing dilemma has to do with turtles.

Apples are Apples
Not everyone likes poetry and that is fine. At the same time, maybe we can admit that we often like to read rhyming scripts to our kiddos. We like how little lessons can seem a little more learnable. Now, poetry is not always for the sake of learning. Self-expression is the big genre these days, but that is far from refuting poetry as an educational tool. And, as a tool, it can plant a seed, hack a weed, or dig down deep. But, what does that have to do with apples?
