Jonathan Moeller

Ok. I may or may not be bragging about this one. But do you ever read a random book and think, “Wait. Is this written by a Lutheran? Is this . . . just that right balance between daring and surprising piety?” Maybe you even follow that up with some web-stalking. At least, that’s what I do, 🙂 and that’s how I’m pleased to tell you about yet another Lutheran writer: this one being Jonathan Moeller, a USA Today bestselling author!

Kristin Lavransdatter

I’m about halfway through Kristin LavransdatterHow did I not know about this/these sooner? I first learned about it from a reference by Lutheran author Lars Walker and then again by a pastor.

Folks. If you’re serious readers, consider this one next time you have a serious chunk of time on your hands. It is not light reading, but it is amazing. Just amazing.

I’m without words except for these: I think the ideal way to read this series/trilogy would be on a week-long silent retreat that ends with some sort of support group.

It reminds me of an orthodox novel I read, but this one is . . . more historic, less gross, . . . more real? I don’t know. This is really something.

Misc.

Ah, my friends, I have had a whirlwind of a summer! Most recently I was able to go on a sister trip to my hometown, Cedarburg, and it was just so wonderful! Now I’m back and eager to get back to work. I can’t promise posts everyday because a) I have a writing project I’ve been meaning to finish for forever now and b) I’m reading Kirstin Lavrensdatter and can hardly look up from it. Still, tomorrow is a double-release day, so please be sure to check out both posts tomorrow. 🙂

My summer isn’t over, though my sister and her family will leave soon from a wonderful almost three-monthly-long visit. Still, my face is turning toward the start of school, much to my children’s chagrin. Ha ha haa. I bet getting back into a schedule will be good for us all.

Happy reading, writing, and all else!

Mary

Failing Pastor

(No idea why this failed to post 7/19 so I rescheduled it for today.) I ran across a blog called Failing Pastor that I’m sharing today. I don’t know who is behind it, or even whether he is Lutheran or not, but my heart really goes out to him and, frankly, to all who have borne heavy burdens in the Office of the Holy Ministry.

So today can we say an extra prayer for our pastors and for all pastors, and, yep, even those who were pastors?

Poetry for the Concordia Deaconess Conference

Next week I’m off to my annual deaconess conference! Yay! Ned & the “Grandma-Campers” will stay in town, but I’ll be off for rest & vocational stimulation! There, I’ve been asked to facilitate one of our rest breakout periods. Though I’ve put together a list & writing prompts already, any suggestions for poetry for the Concordia Deaconess Conference? 😀
