Build a Culture

I visited my folks and caught a glimpse of the Masterpiece Theater show VictoriaIt looked quite good, and there was a lovely scene of a young Victoria singing while her husband tries to accompany her on piano. It struck me just how much culture and entertainment have changed. So I ask you, if you could, how would– or could–you build a culture differently within your family? Neighborhood? Novel?!

Escapism

It’s my blog and I can elaborate if I want to. 😉 Yesterday I suggested that writing can be the opposite of escapism, so I thought I’d explore that a little more today.

Writing Idolatry

I find Bible study to be very provocative in a possible sense. It gets my juices flowing, seeing new connections to God’s mercy and fulfillments of prophecies. And, it just so happens that when your brain starts to work, sometimes it continues! Yay! I often find myself scribbling down notes and ideas in between Bible study and church as I ponder from that productive state of mind. What Bible study brought up today, however–in my mind at least, is whether I succumb to writing idolatry.

About Blogging

This January has been a time of mad-multitasking for me. I’m decluttering, recluttering, and generally puttering around every major thought or project I set eyes on. 🙂 I’ve been in Scripture more, writing up a proposal for a finalized children’s text, restructuring our homeschooling & content, and even dabbling into resources about blogging.

Finding your genre(s)

Agents often hear from people who think they can write across genre lines–doing it all–and, well, it doesn’t sound like agents ever believe it. Makes sense. So, my question for you is how did you go about finding your genre(s)?

Full Range of Experiences

A “full range of experiences” sounds pretty good, like a full range of experiences on a vacation or something. Less good is the writers’ milestone “going out of print”. It’s super common. It’s nothing to be particularly ashamed of–or so I’m telling myself–because, as a writer, I’ve now experienced the full range of experiences. Except, you know, fame and fortune. 😉

Single Words

You know how some people pick a word instead of a resolution for New Year? It’s a neat idea. I wonder if I’ll grow into it. Right now I’m chuckling about how much writers can complicate single words.

Puzzled

These days when I’ve sat down to write, I find myself puzzled. I have ideas in a few different genres and projects at various stages of progress. You’d think I could sit down and write what I want, right? Somehow it isn’t happening that way for me right now.

Progress Indicators

I hope by now I’ve established that I want to encourage you, especially to write. Now, sure, I’d like to sell a few books along the way so now and again I look up things about “author websites” and blah blah blah. Well, A) apparently I’m not going to be giving any advice about “author websites,” and B) it’s apparently a thing to have progress indicators.
